The short answer
In CS2, a skin's wear is the condition label such as Factory New or Field-Tested. A float is the numerical value associated with that wear. A pattern can change the visual placement or look of a finish. These details mean two skins with the same weapon and finish name may not look identical.
This is a practical vocabulary guide, not financial advice. Always inspect the exact item you are considering.
Wear and float
Wear is the easy-to-read label players see. Float is the underlying numerical condition value. In general, lower float values are associated with cleaner-looking examples, but the visual result depends on the finish. Some finishes show wear very differently across their range.
| Term | What it means | What to check | | --- | --- | --- | | Factory New | The cleanest standard wear label | Inspect the finish; do not assume every Factory New item looks identical | | Minimal Wear | A low-wear label | Compare screenshots or inspect the actual item | | Field-Tested | A mid-range label | Wear can be more visible on some finishes than others | | Well-Worn | A higher-wear label | Check major visible scratches or fading | | Battle-Scarred | The most-worn standard label | Some players deliberately like the worn appearance | | Float | Numerical condition value | Compare it only within the item's permitted range and visual context |
What is a pattern?
A pattern is a variation in how a finish is applied or presented. It can influence the placement of colors, motifs, or other visual elements. Pattern interest is highly finish-specific: a number that matters for one finish may be irrelevant for another. Do not pay attention to a pattern number unless you understand why it is relevant to that specific skin.
Other terms worth knowing
Collection
A collection is a named group of items released together or obtainable through a particular CS2 system. Valve can add or rotate collections. For example, Valve introduced the Dead Hand Collection in March 2026 and added Spy Tech and Arabesque to the Armory in July 2026.
StatTrak
StatTrak is a special item feature on applicable weapons that tracks certain in-game kills. It does not make an item universally “better”; it is a preference and availability detail.
Stickers and capsules
Stickers are cosmetic decals that can be applied to eligible weapons. Capsules are containers associated with sticker sets. Check whether a sticker has been applied or scraped before comparing an item with a clean version.
Five checks before selecting a skin
- Confirm weapon, finish, collection, and wear.
- Inspect the exact item—not merely a marketplace example.
- Look for applied stickers, name tags, StatTrak status, and pattern where relevant.
- Decide whether you value appearance, loadout fit, or a collection theme.
- Protect your account and review Steam trade details carefully.
Finding items through SkinTasks
The SkinTasks catalog is a separate, dynamic rewards inventory. After completing eligible tasks, browse CS2 rewards and inspect the live title, price, and availability. A catalog listing should be your reference for whether a reward is currently obtainable there.
FAQ
Does a lower float always mean a better skin?
Not necessarily. It often means less visible wear, but the finish, pattern, and your own preference matter.
Does every skin have a meaningful pattern?
No. Pattern importance varies by finish. Only evaluate it when it changes a visible characteristic you care about.
Is wear the same as rarity?
No. Wear describes condition; rarity describes an item's classification. They are different attributes.
